Current Concepts

The concepts we are currently covering include:

Sunshine State Standard 4: Polynomials

"Students perform operations on polynomials. They find factors of polynomials, learning special techniques for factoring quadratics. They understand the relationships among the solutions of polynomial equations, the zeros of a polynomial function, the x-intercepts of a graph, and the factors of a polynomial."

Definitions:

Monomial: a polynomial with one term

Polynomial: a sum or difference of variables of varying powers with coefficients that are either real or imaginary.

Factor of a Polynomial: Any polynomial which evenly divides into a given polynomial.

Important Theorems and Methods:
  • Synthetic Division
  • Fundamental Theorem of Algebra
  • Remainder Theorem
  • Rational Root Theorem
  • Descartes' Rule of Signs
  • Conjugate Root Theorem
  • Binomial Theorem

Sunshine State Standard 7: Quadratic Equations

Students draw graphs of quadratic functions. They solve quadratic equations and solve these equations by factoring, completing the square and by using the quadratic formula. They also use graphing calculators to find approximate solutions of quadratic equations.

Definitions:

Quadratic equation: an equation that contains only second degree polynomials (variables to the second power).

Quadratic formula: then formula for the roots of a quadratic equation:

Discriminant: the part inside the radical in the quadratic formula: b2 – 4ac

Important Theorems and Methods:
  • Completing the Square
  • Factoring
